William came to visit me with fruit. He sat by my bed, using a small knife to peel an apple.
“Don’t worry, I won’t let Jessica off so easily. And you don’t need to worry about the medical bills.”
I frowned at him: “What do you mean by that? Don’t you like Jessica anymore?”
William’s hand paused. He looked up, his deep eyes gazing at me.
“I’ve only just realized what it means to like someone. I don’t like her. So Wren, don’t leave me.”
I only felt a chill run down my spine, realizing his knife was lightly resting on my fingers.
I couldn’t help but flinch, but he held my shoulder, his forehead pressing against mine, our breaths mingling.
“Promise me you won’t leave me.”
But I calmly pushed him away: “William, when you were with me, were you already engaged to Jessica?”
William’s eyes suddenly became panicked, but he leaned in closer, even encircling me in his arms.
“Let me explain. That was all arranged a long time ago. I never took it seriously…”
“But you really liked her. When you were with me, you still liked her, didn’t you?”
My gaze was clear as I tried to push against his chest with my good arm, keeping some distance between us.
“It’s not like that.”
His eyes were even slightly red, but he gripped the fruit knife tighter.
<
“Wren, I only love you.”
He brought the knife close to my neck, but closed his eyes and kissed me.
My hair stood on end. I felt he’d really gone crazy.
Thankfully, Rowan rushed back just in time. He punched William, knocking him down, and stood in front of me.
“William Carter, you’re insane! I’m telling you, Wren will never like you again!”
William stood up, wiping the blood from his split lip.
He looked at me with dark eyes, suddenly smiling: “Wren, you will like me.”
No, I won’t.
Not only will I never like him again, I plan to drag him down into the mud.
His family had developed a housing complex before, but construction had stalled for half a year.
He’d once casually told me that even though they had the money, they wouldn’t continue building. So that eagerly anticipated complex became an abandoned project.
But the money from the buyers went into his family’s pockets, used to invest in other businesses or for personal spending.
I’d looked it up before. Just one of William’s dress shirts cost tens of thousands of dollars, and his watch was worth over a million.
People like that would never empathize with ordinary folks.
It was the same with me. He just saw me as his possession.
I anonymously sent the recording to several well–known reporters. The Carter Group hit the trending topics too.
The homebuyers who’d paid deposits panicked, demanding answers from the company.
The Carter Group’s stock plummeted in one day, forcing William’s grandfather to make a public statement promising they’d finish building the
homes.
Though I’d disguised my voice, William would know it was me.
No matter how careful I was, he still caught me.
When I woke up again, I was in a pitch–black room.
William lit a candle. His pale face in the candlelight took on a ghostly quality.
I thought he’d come for revenge and was prepared to sacrifice myself.
But William just set down the candle and came to my side, reaching out to touch my face.
“You leaked the recording?”
I turned my head away, deciding to go all in: “Yes, so what are you going to do about it?”
His voice suddenly deepened: “So all that before, you weren’t really in love with me?”
I nodded: “Of course not. How could I ever truly like someone like you?”
“Then who do you like? Someone like Rowan?”
“What’s wrong with Rowan? Do I need to report to you who I like? Besides, Rowan is way better than you.”
<
As soon as I finished speaking, he bit me.
I was shocked and scared, not knowing if he’d really gone insane.
William seemed to have completely changed. He kissed and bit me like a wolf cub.
He kept repeating: “But I like you. You have to like me too.”
I couldn’t help trying to dodge, but he held me tighter.
