Reveling in the envious looks tossed her way, Simone held her head up high.
Meanwhile, Jeremy was stupefied as he took in Simone’s behavior. “Is she that rich?”
“I’m guessing she thinks we’ll foot the bill for her,” I said.
Jeremy and I were not only childhood sweethearts, but our families were equally well–off too. On the first day of school, we arrived on campus in luxury cars. I guessed that made us the targets of someone like Simone.
I watched as the sales assistants‘ flattery put Simone in such a good mood that she started asking them to wrap the items up. Thus, I quickly dragged Jeremy out of the store.
Unsurprisingly, we barely took a few steps before Simone called me. I put my phone on silent before pocketing it once more. After buying myself a milkshake, I went back to the dorm and sat at my desk to get started.on my assignments.
Sometime later, the door flew open with a bang. A sweaty Simone was standing in the doorway glaring at me.
“Andrea! Why did you leave?”
Rubbing my ears, I asked, “What’s wrong? I’ve got legs. I can go wherever I please, can’t I?”
“Do you know that everyone in the store mocked me and looked down on me because you didn’t pay
for the things I tried?”
I eyed the cheap clothes Simone was wearing in scorn. Her top looked worn, and her pants were too short for her.
“Why should I pay for you, Simone?”
“Well, you’re rich, and we’re roommates.”
“Oh. We’re only roommates, huh? Here I was thinking you were my mother or something.”
Simone was probably in the middle of a livestream, for she started crying in an exaggerated
manner.
“Andrea, I know you look down on me because I’m poor, but how can you say something like that? You’re not even treating me as a friend.”
What a ridiculous leap of logic that was. I knew she was doing it on purpose to garner attention.
I replied, “Since you know you’re poor, you shouldn’t frequent a luxury mall. I can afford to go there because my family has never been poor. You don’t seem to know your limits at all.”
Simone turned scarlet with humiliation. Realizing that she couldn’t win an argument over me, she grabbed her kettle and left.
I checked her livestream, and true enough, her viewers were in an uproar in the comments.

“That heiress has humiliated all poor people!”
“So what if she’s rich? She can’t look down on others like this.”

“It’s not like the money is hers anyway. She doesn’t know how to save money at all. Can her family’s wealth last longer than this generation if she continues spending all their money like that?”
Using a burner account, I asked a question of my own.
“But aren’t the heiress‘ parents working hard to earn money and improve their family’s lifestyle? What’s wrong with them letting her spend their money?”
Alas, this was Simone’s livestream after all. All I got in return was a bunch of people cursing me out. Everyone hoped that my family would go bankrupt overnight so that I would have to experience what it was like being poor.
