Chapter 3
After leaving the hospital room, Julia encountered several doctors and nurses that she knew on her way out.
“Hey, hello, Dr. Valentine!” someone greeted her.
Julia didn’t respond and nodded symbolically as a form of greeting. As she passed by, she overheard a hushed conversation.
“It seems like Dr. Valentine isn’t on duty today. She’s probably here to donate blood,” someone commented.
“Yeah, I wonder what her relationship is with the woman in the VIP ward. Dr. Valentine was promoted to deputy chief surgeon when she hadn’t been with the hospital for long. There must be someone backing her up,” another person assumed.
Julia had sharp ears and caught every word of their conversation, but she ignored it without a change in her expression. She wasn’t working at this hospital initially. Joseph had transferred her here for the convenience of donating blood to Amelie. Julia’s relationships with colleagues here were average at best, and she wasn’t very familiar with them. She didn’t care much about gossip, so she let their words slide.
After leaving the hospital, Julia took a taxi back to the Mullins family’s residence to pack her belongings. She didn’t have much to take, so she was done quickly. Seeing her with a suitcase, the servants asked her where she was going.
Julia usually got along well with the servants and didn’t want to deceive them. She smiled and said, “I’ve divorced Mr. Mullins.” “Divorced? Mrs. Mullins, you…”
Julia left the key at the entrance, stood at the door, and turned to look at them with a smile. “Don’t call me ‘Mrs. Mullins‘ anymore. We’ll meet again if we have the chance.”
As they watched her leave, some of the servants couldn’t help but wipe their tears and whispered, “It’s such a pity that Mr. Mullins doesn’t know how to cherish Mrs. Mullins…”

Julia dragged her suitcase along. Her initial plans were to return home. However, considering how her parents would react to her divorce, she immediately dismissed the thought. She hadn’t made any housing arrangements, so she decided to stay at the dormitory assigned by the hospital temporarily..
Julia had never lived in a dorm before. As she entered the room, she was greeted by a thick layer of dust, which made her cough repeatedly.
Julia sighed and went to the convenience store at the ground level to buy a washing cloth, ready to give the room a thorough cleaning. It was evening by the time she lay down on the bed, and she was so tired that she didn’t want to move a single finger or go downstairs to have dinner.
Just as she turned on her phone to order takeout, a call came in. It was from her mother, Eliza Valentine.
“Where the hell are you right now?” Eliza’s sharp voice almost pierced through Julia’s eardrums.
Julia felt a headache coming on. “I’m in the hospital dormitory.”
“You better get your stupid ass downstairs and wait for us right now! We’re coming over!” Eliza demanded.
Not knowing what had happened, Julia had no choice but to go downstairs reluctantly. Her parents arrived soon, almost charging at her as soon as they saw her.
“Have you gone mad, you idiot? Why the hell did you divorce him? Did you do this on purpose? You didn’t even bother to tell us about it. If we hadn’t visited the Mullins family today, who knows how long you would have kept us in the dark!” Eliza pointed at Julia and scolded her.
Julia couldn’t be bothered to take Eliza’s words seriously. The only thing she heard Eliza mentioned was the Mullins family.

Instantly, Julia furrowed her brow and asked, “You visited the Mullins family? Why didn’t you tell me before you went there?” She was getting anxious, and her voice became cold and stern.
Julia, what’s with your attitude toward your mother? You’re getting bolder! Do you even understand what respect is? We worked hard to raise you, and this is how you treat us? If it weren’t for us, you would have frozen to death on the street long ago!” Julia’s father, Rashad Valentine, scolded. He was frowning and displeasure was evident on his face.
Julia had known a long time ago that she was adopted. Throughout her childhood years, Rashad and Eliza constantly emphasized this as if they were her saviors.
Julia used to be grateful to them and endured whatever scolding and beating they gave her. But Rashad and Eliza had become increasingly unreasonable. Julia had once felt that she would have been better off if she hadn’t been adopted by them, wishing she had died in that winter many years ago.
