Chapter 37
Amelie’s expression grew sadder, She stepped forward, attempting to embrace Joseph. “I only feel at ease when you’re at
home.
Unexpectedly, Joseph sidestepped, keeping a distance from Amelie. “If that’s the case, I’ll replace them. It’s late. Get some rest.” he said before heading to the study.
His tall figure reflected in Amelie’s eyes. Deep inside, she felt a great sense of disappointment. This wasn’t going according to her plan. She couldn’t understand why Joseph was growing increasingly distant from her.
In the past, he would have replaced the servant and caregiver in the villa without hesitation. When she first returned from abroad, she used this tactic to have Joseph replace the doctors and nurses in the hospital caring for her with people she
trusted.
Thinking this, Amelie didn’t follow Joseph’s advice to rest. Instead, she went downstairs. Seeing Ashley, she asked coldly. “Did you tell Mr. Mullins that you made the mushroom soup in the kitchen?”
“No, I didn’t,” Ashley hurriedly replied. But in her mind, she added, ‘If Mr. Mullins found out about this on his own, it’s not my
Satisfied with the answer, Amelie went to the kitchen and brought the mushroom soup upstairs. Before heading upstairs, she warned the others. If I find out you said anything inappropriate in front of Joseph, I won’t let it slide”
Then she went upstairs, heading straight to the study. In the study, Joseph sat behind his desk, staring at the emails on the computer screen but not absorbing a single word. The servants words echoed repeatedly in his mind. Simultaneously, he couldn’t help but recall the gentle greetings Julia would offer every time he returned to Fountain Garden in the past.
Joseph had never paid attention to those moments in the past, but for some reason, they were etched in his memory, lingering and difficult to forget.
The phone on the table buzzed insistently. Josepht picked it up and pressed the answer button. Joel’s voice came through the
line
“Mr. Mullins, I found the medicine you mentioned earlier,” Joel said.
Joseph sat up straight, tapping his long fingers on the table. “What medicine is it?”
“It’s an imported roolic. After taking it, one will fall unconscious without a trace and wake up with no memory that they had fallen unconscious. It’s banned here but circulates in some shady places. No clue as to how Miss Hamilton got her hands on it,” replied Joel.
Amelie had stayed in the hospital after returning from abroad. She had also moved to Fountain Garden when her health improved recently. Joseph couldn’t figure out who might have given her that drug
“What else have you found?” Joseph asked..
“I did some digging on Miss Hamilton’s call and purchase records. I found numerous international numbers often contacted her, but she sometimes answers them and sometimes doesn’t,” Joel replied.
Joseph remembered a few instances when he was with Amelie in which her expression turned anxious when her phone rang. yet she didn’t pick it up.
“It’s her privacy. No need to investigate further on this,” Joseph remarked.
However, there was one thing Joseph had to figure out, and that was if Amelie genuinely didn’t know the effects of that drug and used it on him unintentionally or if it was deliberate.
At that moment, a knock echoed through the study door. Joseph hung up the phone and saw Amelie entering with mushroom soup. The familiar scent eased Joseph’s expression a bit.

Chapter 37
“Joseph, I made this mushroom soup for you myself. You must be tired, working late. Have some soup to recharge,” Amelie said, her shy and concerned look resembling that of a caring wife worrying about her husband.
Joseply’s gaze fell onto the bowl. The last time, he had sensed a striking similarity between this mushroom soup’s taste and the one he had before. He figured Julia must have made the soups herself in the past and later passed down the recipe to Ashley That explained why, even though Julia no longer lived there, he could still savor the same flavor in the soup.
Josepli’s eyes turned cool. He had never doubted Amelie’s words before.
Setting the mushroom soup aside, he asked, “Amelie, have you ever heard of a drug that can make someone fall unconscious without knowing and then wake up with no memory of what happened?”
Amelie’s face froze. She didn’t understand why Joseph was asking about this out of the blue, worried that he might have found out something.
“I… Why would I know about such a drug? Joseph, why are you interested in this drug?” Amelie asked, lowering her head. She wanted to pretend she didn’t know, but it only made her seem more suspicious.
Joseph’s slender fingertips tapped lightly on the table, a sharp glint flashing in his deep, dark eyes. “Just a casual inquiry. That night didn’t sit riglu with me, and I completely forgot what happened afterward, so I’m curious.”
Amelie couldn’t quite fathom whether Joseph was suspicious of her or not. She quickly added, “It’s because you were exhausted and had a bit of liquor, Joseph, are you suspecting me?”
The study fell silent. After a moment, Joseph withdrew his hand and said softly. “No.”
Concerned that she might give something away if she lingered further, Amelie hurried to leave the study, just then, asked again. “Maybe I should switch your doctor. Seems like he’s not that good. It’s been a year, and he hasn’t made,
better.”
Amelie was startled once more. “No need for that. Dr. Anderson has always been my attending physician. I only trust her in the entire hospital, she replied anxiously.
Upon hearing this, Joseph didn’t say anything more. “Get some rest,” he said.
This time, Amelie didn’t subtly hint for Joseph to accompany her. Instead, she hurried back to her room. Watching her slightly flustered figure, Joseph’s eyes darkened a bit..
Back in her room, Amelie made a call. “Amanda, where did you get that drug last time? If it’s discovered, Joseph will surely suspect me of drugging him?”
Amanda Fisher was Amelie’s former agent. They had maintained contact even when Amelia was abroad. And the drug Amelie used the other time, of course, had been provided by her.
“Don’t worry. I got that drug from overseas. No chance anyone can trace it, Amanda assured.
Amanda continued to handle Amelie’s affairs in person because she saw unprecedented value in her. The Mullins family in Nexius City was a top–tier influential family with vast businesses throughout Helonia. While they usually kept a low profile. they occupied the pinnacle of the entire upper–class society.
If Amelie could marry into the Mullins family, her status would undergo a drastic transformation and bring substantial benefits to Amanda.
“That’s good, but there’s another problem Joseph had seen my pregnancy test results, but he’s remained indifferent these days.” One thing Amelie hadn’t told Amanda was that Joseph’s attitude toward Julia had changed noticeably,
Amanda hoped for Amelie to enter the rich man’s world as well. After a pause, she said. “If you want Joseph to marry you as soon as possible, I can help you figure something out. If everyone knows you’re carrying his child, perhaps it’ll be easier to pressure him into marrying you.”
After all, the power of public opinion was formidable. Regardless of a man’s status and power, he had to yield under public

pressure. He would have to marry the woman carrying his child to avoid tarnishing his reputation..
Amelie hesitated and asked. “Is that feasible?”
“Of course, you just have to follow my instructions. You need to ensure that Joseph appears with you at the hospital. Ill arrange for reporters to be there,” answered Amanda
