I frowned, my grip tightening on the phone. This number was new–so new, in fact, that Nicolas shouldn’t have had it.
“How did you get my number?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
There was a brief silence on the other end before he snapped, his tone sharp with irritation.
“I got it from one of your relatives.”
That sounded plausible. After getting this new number, I’d called a few uncles and other family members to let them know I was back in Eldermere. It was the polite thing to do, especially for the elders.
“What do you want?” I asked bluntly, skipping the formalities.
“I want to know where you are.” His voice rose, laced with something more than frustration–something edging

“Have you come back to Eldermere?”
I didn’t answer.
“Are you at the Lunaris Hotel?”
There was a tremor in his voice when he asked that last question, almost as if he was dreading my response. I didn’t say a word. Instead, I ended the call and promptly blocked his number.
A few minutes later, Lyle, ever the considerate one, appeared with a tray of fruit and pastries just as I was touching up my makeup.
“You haven’t had breakfast, have you? You need to eat something. Here, I brought you some snack,” he said softly before leaving the room.

“So you found yourself a softie. That‘ st impressive, Rowena,” he said, his smile unsettling. “Lyle sure knows how to

His words dripped with venom, but it wasn‘ t his expression that unnerved me- it was the woman standing behind him. Annette looked furious, her face pale with tension.
“Nicolas…” she began hesitantly, her voice soft. “I think we shouldn‘ t-” Nicolas turned, his expression hardening as he snapped at her.
“Stay out of this, Annette. Wait outside!” he ordered, his tone sharp enough to make her flinch.

Annette bit her lip, glaring at me briefly before reluctantly retreating from the

The moment the door closed, Nicolas let his fury loose. He pulled a lighter from his pocket, flipping it open with a menacing click. His eyes locked on the hem of my wedding dress.
“What the hell are you doing?” I snapped, yanking my dress away as he moved to set the fabric on fire.

The slap came before I could stop myself. My hand flew across his face with a sharp crack, jerking his head to the side.
“Get out!” I yelled, my chest heaving with
rage.
For a moment, he seemed stunned. Then, slowly, his head turned back, his eyes narrowing. He laughed–a bitter,
humorless sound–as he released his hold
on me.
“Get out?” he echoed, his voice mocking. “No, Rowena. Don’t you set this all up for me? Let’s not waste the efforts. I‘ 11 play along. Let’s see how far you and Lyle can take this little performance. I’ll be right there at the reception, watching every second of it.”
He turned on his heel to leave, but the moment he opened the door, Lyle was waiting. And Lyle’s fist was ready.

The punch landed squarely on Nicolas‘ s jaw, sending him stumbling back with a groan. Lyle didn’t say a word at first, his usually calm eyes blazing with fury. I was the first time I saw him wrapped in anger, When Nicolas finally steadied himself, blood dripped from his mouth, staining his shirt.

Annette burst into the room with a scream, rushing to Nicolas‘ s side as he swayed slightly. She threw a glare at Lyle before helping Nicolas to his feet.
As they turned to leave, Lyle’s voice stopped them cold.
“Nicolas,” he said evenly, though his tone was sharp with warning. “I swear to God, if you pull another stunt like this, I won’t stop at one punch.”

Then, his expression softened and he glanced at me before turning back to Nicolas.
“I won’t pretend to welcome you to my wedding. But since you‘ re here, consider yourself a guest. Someone will show you to a seat in the hall. And while you‘ re at it…” Lyle‘ s lips curled into a faint smile, but there was no warmth in it. “…pay attention. Maybe you‘ ll learn something about how a good marriage works.”
With that, he turned back to me, his gaze filled with tenderness as he reached out to brush a stray strand of hair from my face.
‘Shall we, Ro?” he asked softly, his voice steady despite the tension still lingering in the air.
