With the exam approaching, I spent most of my time in the library studying, except for meals.
The professor I chose was highly popular abroad and required the graduate school entrance exam scores as a reference.
After that day, I blocked Jack’s social media and actively withdrew from all social circles related to him.
[Emily, do you have time this week?]
Mrs. Wilson’s message popped up.
I thought Jack had told her about what happened that day, and before I could send a comforting message, Mrs. Wilson continued: [Jack is bringing his girlfriend over this Sunday. Come home and join us to meet her.]
Jack’s parents had been busy with business for the past few years, mostly out of town.
Hearing that their son was planning to introduce his girlfriend to the family, they rushed back.
I didn’t want to see Jack again.
But Mrs. Wilson had treated me well, and I should say goodbye to her before leaving.
I took a deep breath and replied [Okay].
The next morning, I was chatting with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.
Jack brought Sophia to the Wilson house.
Sophia must have done her homework in advance, as everything she said pleased the two elders.
The two elders seemed to like this future daughter–in–law, unable to hide their fondness.
Mrs. Wilson even ignored Mr. Wilson’s warning glances and was about to take out her old dowry to give to Sophia.
I had some impression of that bracelet.
When I first moved into the Wilson house, the unfamiliar environment often made me cry.
At that time, Mrs. Wilson took out the bracelet to cheer me up, saying it was for her future daughter–in–law. She asked if I would like to be Jack’s wife when I grew up.
At that innocent age, it made my little face turn red.
But as I grew up, Mrs. Wilson never mentioned it again.
Perhaps she forgot because of her busy life.
Besides, Jack had found a girlfriend now, so by rights, it shouldn’t belong to me anymore.
I sat aside, silently acting as a background character.
Sophia suddenly turned the topic to me: “Emily, when are you going to bring your boyfriend home to meet Mr. and Mrs. Wilson?”
Mrs. Wilson turned to look at me: “That’s right, Emily. You’re the same age as Jack, and he already has a girlfriend. Shouldn’t you be putting some effort into this too?”
I quickly put down the cup in my hand and shook my head: “Ah, the exam is coming up soon. I don’t have any other thoughts at the moment…”
“Auntie,” Sophia interrupted me, giving me a malicious look.

“Emily already has a boyfriend.”
I have a boyfriend?
How come I don’t know about this?
Before I could speak, she coyly tugged at Jack’s arm: “She often stayed out all night with her boyfriend before. Don’t you know about this?”
With these words, everyone’s eyes turned to me.
The two elders didn’t look pleased.
“Emily, is what Sophia said… all true?” Mr. Wilson asked me very seriously, his brows furrowed.
“We’re all adults, so I shouldn’t interfere, but girls still need to value themselves…”
Mrs. Wilson gave him a look, and he didn’t continue.
I opened my mouth, wanting to explain.
But when the words reached my lips, I couldn’t speak.
How could I tell them that the person who had been coaxing me to go out was Jack?
If I said this, it wouldn’t just be embarrassing for him, but also for Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.
They liked Sophia so much, I didn’t want to make them upset because of me.
“Uncle, actually…”
“Dad, Emily was just going out to play with her roommates,” Jack interrupted before I could speak. “With me at school, she wouldn’t dare mess around with untrustworthy people.”
He patted his chest, guaranteeing it.
When he looked at me, it was like he was pleading.
Don’t expose what happened between us.
I let out a long breath, looked away, and nodded to the two elders: “That’s right, Uncle and Auntie. I really don’t have a boyfriend.”
Hearing my words, the two elders finally relaxed.
After the family dinner ended, they rushed back to their workplace.
I had planned to tell them about my going abroad but didn’t get the chance to speak.
Jack left with Sophia, and I declined their offer to go back together, taking a taxi alone to the library near the school.
As evening approached, I suddenly remembered that I had left some important documents at the Wilson house.
These were crucial for both the exam and going abroad.
After some thought, I decided to make a quick trip back.
