Debra nodded in understanding.
Rehabilitation was a good thing. Even if there was a slim chance of walking again, no one wanted to spend their life in a wheelchair.
She said, “With Andrew’s willpower, he won’t be fazed by daily rehab. What defeated him before was his pride.”
Andrew was a prodigy. He was too proud to endure mockery from ordinary people.
Debra glanced at the closed door to Andrew’s room. Thuds and crashes echoed from inside. She couldn’t help but wonder why Andrew wouldn’t take Theda’s medication.
She headed upstairs and came down again shortly after.
Erica asked, “Are you going out?”
“Yeah,” Debra replied, grabbing the car keys.
She drove to the old house of the Nichols family. At the sight of her, the security guards went on high alert.
“Relax. I’m here for business,” Debra muttered as she got out of the car.
With every step she took forward, the guards took one step back.
She glanced down at herself. “Do I look like some kind of monster?”
The guards exchanged uneasy glances. Everyone in Seamar City knew Debra was Marion’s fiancée. And these guards had suffered plenty at Marion’s hands.
Not long ago, Marion had disguised himself as a robber, tying them up and stabbing Juan. The traumatic experience was still vivid in their memories.
Debra said, “Do me a favor and let Melody know I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m here to see someone.”
The guards hesitated. Trouble or not, the distinction felt thin. Debra was the last person Melody wanted to see.
“Did I not make myself clear?” she pressed.
The guards felt the pressure and rushed inside the house to deliver the message.
At that moment, Melody was having breakfast with Theda.
She frowned at the guard’s panicky manners. “What’s the matter?”
“Ma’am, Debra Frazier is here.”

“Somewhere quieter. This place isn’t ideal.”

Melody slammed her hand on the table. “It’s not okay.”
