and laughed, “He’ll get one. What’s the
rush?” She had teased me, “I’ll give you a
ring within ten years.
I smiled but said nothing. I missed Sarah so
much. Sarah wouldn’t make me empty
promises. It was true that our faces might
have been similar, but we were different
people.
I wanted to distance myself from Tiffany after
that. I didn’t answer her calls, or text her
back. I changed the locks on my doors and
stopped going to her house. A few days later,
she had a stomach problem. She showed me
her face, pale and thin. It reminded me of
when Sarah had disappeared in the war zone.
I couldn’t help myself. I went to see her,
despite Mike’s eye roll. Her house was a
く
mess, full of empty bottles. I cleaned up,
made her soup, did her laundry, took care of
her.
Tiffany grabbed my hand, “Don’t ignore me. I
didn’t lie to you. I’ll get you a ring in the next ten years.” She made a gesture. “I’ll make it myself.” I chuckled, “Then why not now?”
Tiffany went quiet, then said softly, “I need to
resolve a personal issue first.” She pulled me
into bed, held me and listened to her heart
beat. “I’m not lying to you, wait ten years.‘
I watched her face and said nothing. Tiffany
held me close, she was afraid I would
disappear, “We have a deal, ten years.” I
placed my head on her chest and listened to
her heart. Heartbeats don’t lie.
