Chapter 10
Lila burst out laughing. “She blocked you, doesn’t need you. She’s now Ms. Bennett, dating Dr. Hart, the head of neurology. You haven’t even seen your son. Where do you get that confidence?”
Samuel smirked. “She’s just trying to make me jealous, to make me come back.”
“You wish.”
I pushed the door open, laughing as I walked in with Dr. Wright.
“We got your engagement invitation,” Dr. Wright said, smiling. “My wife and I will be there.”
“It’s an honor. Julian always mentions how kind you are. He has few friends; please continue looking out for him.”
Dr. Wright nodded warmly.

Samuel seized my arm. “Morgan! I’m divorcing Lila soon. Let’s get back together. Don’t marry that guy!”
“Why would I want used goods? Julian, even with autism, is better than you.”
“You weren’t like this before,” Samuel whispered, stunned.
I sighed and pushed him away. “I wasn’t thinking straight before. Now I am. And don’t grab me like that–your wife is still here. It wouldn’t look good.”
Lila scoffed and walked out with the actor, waving over her shoulder. Samuel looked defeated.
From that day, Samuel began begging me to reconcile, waiting outside my building, even in heavy rain.
One evening, Julian, concerned, asked, “Should I make him some hot tea?”
I shook my head.
Samuel, drenched, saw me approaching and choked out, “I knew you wouldn’t be so cold. You still care.”
I smiled. “You misunderstood. I came down for my boyfriend’s birthday cake.”
Taking the cake from the delivery guy, I added, “An ex should be like they’re dead.”
Samuel grabbed my arm, but I slapped him away. “Stop pretending you care. Leave me alone.”
As I headed back up, I heard a crash but didn’t turn around.
Later, I learned Samuel had been in a car accident that night. He was left paralyzed.
Lila didn’t divorce him but sent him to Brookside Rehabilitation Center while she moved in with her new lover, spending Samuel’s settlement money. Her botched cosmetic surgery had left her face scarred from complications.
Their child’s surgery was successful, but delayed treatment due to Lila’s wasted money caused lasting issues.
Alex shook her head when she heard. “Karma exists.”
She then held up my wedding dress. “Black for the wedding? Your boyfriend has a unique taste.”
I chuckled. The black dress was my idea; Julian had simply agreed. The only time he’d protested was when I joked about having a child for him.
He’d immediately covered my mouth. “I don’t need that. I just want you to live your life fully, in a way you love.”
Despite the challenges, I found my new beginning.
The past may have been inevitable, but the future is full of hope.
