That night, I received a call from Rachel’s mother.
“Hazel, what’s going on? Why is Mr. Gu suddenly targeting us for no reason? There must be some misunderstanding. Please talk to Mr. Gu quickly.”
Rachel’s parents had been very good to me, in stark contrast to my own parents who ignored me.
This was also one of the main reasons why Rachel and I had such a good relationship.
Unfortunately, their kindness to me was all based on my family’s wealth and ability to provide them with better help.
“Auntie, I don’t know.”
“How can you not know? You’re Adrian’s wife. Your uncle is so anxious now he can’t think straight. We’ve been so good to you, you won’t just stand by and watch, will you?”
“Yes, but if it wasn’t for my family’s financial support back then, uncle’s company would have collapsed long ago, right?”
Rachel’s father’s business had only taken off because I had borrowed money from my parents to help him.
But in all these years, their family hadn’t repaid a single cent.
“It was just 8 million dollars. Does your family really need that little money? You ungrateful wretch. We were too nice to you.”
With that, Rachel’s mother hung up the phone abruptly.
Adrian had bought me a new phone, with all the apps backed up. It was almost identical to before.
But Rachel’s contact information was nowhere to be found.
However, Rachel wouldn’t give up so easily. She quickly contacted me again using a new phone number.
She chose a time when Adrian had gone to the office to call me. I was alone in the bedroom when her anxious voice came through the
receiver.
“Hazel, something happened to Jack. He couldn’t reach you and got drunk last night looking for you. He was hit by a car. Quick, bring some money and come!”
Her acting was really too amateurish. I lost all desire to continue talking to her.
“Oh, then just bury him.”
That night, I had a dream. I dreamt that I had finally managed to get rid of Adrian and gone abroad with Jack.
At first, he was as deeply affectionate as I remembered from my youth.
But soon he said his business had failed and asked me to give him all my money to help him get through the crisis.
Without hesitation, I gave Jack all the money I had received from divorcing Adrian.
The man immediately changed his attitude, indulging in womanizing and ignoring me, even taunting me coldly.
“What right does a divorced woman with a child have to be with me? You should be grateful I even come back at all.”
I made a fuss a few times. In the end, Jack simply took all the money and ran away. When I returned to China, I was penniless.
Remembering the days of living with rats in the basement, I woke up with a start.
Only after seeing the man lying beside me did I finally calm down. I carefully snuggled into his arms.
The person next to me had his eyes tightly closed, but one arm instinctively pulled me into his embrace.
I had to admit, at this moment, only this embrace could give me infinite security.
