Garland straightened up. “Alright, let me handle this old…”

Turning to the mirror, he started to adjust his clothes.

Dropping his usual playful smile, he said, “Verna, to the study.”
“Yes, sir.” Verna led Garland out.
In the study, Garland sat behind the desk, trying out several poses before settling on a more relaxed one. Verna announced, “Sir, Mrs. Nichols Sr. is here.”
“Alright,” Garland acknowledged. “Show her in.”
Verna opened the door, and Melody entered in a white dress. She carried herself with the grace of a noblewoman from a bygone era.
Garland looked her over, impressed that she had maintained her appearance so well at her
age.
‘Bert has good taste, though she doesn’t look like my mother at all,‘ he thought. ‘But why did rumors have it that my mother was her stand–in? The media really needs a cleanup.‘
“Aren’t you going to offer me a seat?” Melody’s voice brought him back to reality.
“Please, sit,” Garland gestured. “Verna, make some tea for Mrs. Nichols Sr.‘
“Will do,” Verna complied.
Garland turned back to Melody and said, “My father and I are usually busy with work, so please forgive us for any neglect.”
“I understand. You’re so busy that we hardly get to see each other,” Melody grunted.
She took a sip of her tea, continuing, “This is my first time in Sea City, and I didn’t intend to trouble you. I just hope you could assist me given the old friendship between Bert and
me.”
“Well, how can we help you?” Garland inquired politely.
Melody replied, “I won’t beat around the bush. Your father and I got to know each other when we were young. We were pretty close, and his son is like my son.”

“You know, I came here not only to find Juan. I also want to get rid of someone.”
Garland almost choked on his tea, wondering if Melody had watched too many crime dramas.
His family wasn’t in that line of business.
Despite his internal complaints, Garland kept his cool. “May I know who exactly you want to deal with?”
“It’s Marion’s wife, Debra,” Melody replied.
Garland was stunned, wondering what kind of twisted game it was.
