Chapter 38
After spending a night at the Lopez family’s mansion, Julia went to the hospital as usual and politely declined the driver arranged by Catalina. She hoped everything could remain as it was. She didn’t enjoy being treated differently. Catalina understood that Julia was like a recluse when it came to material desires and respected Julia’s discretion, refraining from excessive interference.
With autumn approaching, the changing season led to a surge in flu cases. Although Julia still conducted her daily consultations, watching the other doctors in the hospital bustling about made her unable to resist lending a hand to others. Despite Byron’s advice for her not to overwork, it didn’t hold much weight.
“Dr. Lopez, I just received a call about a series of accidents in the suburbs. All the ambulances from the hospital have been dispatched, and quite a few police officers are controlling the situation on–site. Looks like we might be busy soon. Emma Wilson, a fellow doctor in the department, sighed. “Natural disasters and accidents are unavoidable these days.
Julia responded solemnly. “That’s why we must be prepared. In critical moments, we must strive to snatch people’s lives from the hands of death.”
In truth, Julia’s temperament wasn’t entirely suited to being a doctor. Hospitals witnessed the most death and gore, and many doctors had to learn to get over death to perform surgeries calmly. But that wasn’t Julia. Every time she stepped into the operating room, she carried the determination to save the patient.
Meanwhile, Amelie had a supposed pregnancy check–up with Stephanie Anderson in the obstetrics and gynecology department. Once the examination procedures were done, she called Joseph.
Joseph, I’m alone at th
hospital. Could you come and pick me up?” Amelie asked.
Joseph’s mind immediately flashed to Julia’s figure. He paused briefly before saying, “Okay”
Amelie hung up the phone, a smile curling on her lips. She calculated Joseph’s expected arrival time and promptly notified Amanda to summon the reporters.
Outside the hospital, the wail of ambulances echoed one after another, julia, alongside other medical staff, helped lift the injured onto stretchers. Her hands and clothes were stained with the vivid redness of blood.
“Dr. Lopez, let me take over. You should rest,” Byron said.
Byron swiftly handled the patients. Once the first batch was wheeled into the emergency room, the next wave of ambulances
was imminent.
“How can I rest at a
a time like this? You go wait outside
e for the new arrivals. If we run out of stretchers, we might have to lift the patients ourselves,” Julia replied.
As she finished speaking, chaotic noises erupted outside, Julia and Byron exchanged a glance before swiftly heading to the door. A group of media reporters had crowded the hospital entrance, causing a blockade at the only pathway for patients to enter. Standing at the center of the commotion were Amelie and Joseph. Reporters bombarded them with questions,
“Mr. Mullins, are you accompanying Miss Hamilton for a prenatal check–up?”
“You two look like a cute couple. Are we about to hear news of an imminent wedding?”
“Mr. Mullins, we’ve heard you and Miss Hamilion grew up together and have been in a relationship. Have you been planning to marry Miss Hamilton for a long time?”
“Can we get a comment from both of you?”
From Julia’s perspective. Amelie, nestled in Joseph’s arms, wearing a sweet and content expression, portrayed the image of a loving celebrity couple.
Julia withdrew her gaze, her face expressionless. She had anticipated this turn of events and believed she should have severed

any lingering hopes long ago.
She knew Joseph’s heart belonged solely to Amelie. Otherwise, based on her understanding of Joseph, he wouldn’t willingly participate in
uch a charade with Ainche. Having spent so much time together, he couldn’t be oblivious to the fact that Amelie wasn’t actually pregnant. In Julia’s eyes, Joseph orchestrated this pregnancy pretense in the media to facilitate a seamless wedding with Amelie. Julia had to praise their plan.
Byron looked at Julia with concern. “Dr. Lopez, are you okay?”
Julia shook her head, refusing to glance back at Joseph and Amelie
“Pull yourself together. The next batch of patients will be here soon,” Byron urged.
As he finished speaking, several more ambulances arrived at the hospital entrance. However, the reporters seemed relentless, fixated on prying the wedding date out of Joseph and Amelie. They continued to block the entrance without budging
“Hey, give way! This is a hospital. How do you expect patients to enter if you block the entrance? Doctors tried to drive the reporters away. But no one paid attention. They even pushed them aside.
Frowning, Julia stepped forward. “Please move aside. This is an emergency. If you keep blocking the entrance, it will delay the patients‘ treatment.”“
She stood in front of the group of reporters, trying to create even a small passage.
“Who are you? Can’t you see we’re conducting interviews here? You’re in the way! A sharp, discontented voice cut through the air. Hands emerged from the crowd and forcefully shoved Julia.
The force of the push caught Julia off guard, and she veered to the side. Unfortunately, she collided with the open glass door. Startled, she instinctively shielded her abdomen with both hands. She wasn’t worried about herself but feared for her unborn child, concerned the impact might harm the baby.
“Dr. Lopez!” Byron exclaimed at the sight.
He had been standing close to Julia, intending to protect her at all times. However, when Julia was pushed, a few people stood between them, and Byron couldn’t push through the crowd to reach her in time.
Suddenly, gasps erupted from the crowd. Joseph forcefully pushed Amelie aside, striding swiftly with long legs. None of the reporters dared to stop him. In full view of everyone, just before Julia hit the door, he unexpectedly pulled her into his arms. This moment caught Amelie off guard and surprised the reporters who were invited by Amanda.
Joseph held Julia tightly, a rare sense of fear in his otherwise impassive eyes, as if afraid she would hit the door.
Julia, don’t you even know how to protect yourself?” He tried to hide the fear and worry in his tone, sounding too harsh.
Just as Julia snapped out of her relief at being rescued, she heard Joseph’s almost accusing tone. She instantly pulled away from his embrace with a cold expression.
“My bad for messing up Mr. Mullins and Miss Hamilton’s interview. When you two set the wedding date, if you’d like, you can send an invitation my way, and I’ll make sure to send a great gift to both of you!” After saying this, Julia realized she was losing control of her emotions.
She instinctively clenched the hand at her side, straightened her back, and addressed the reporters. This is a hospital, a place for saving lives. If you folks won’t leave, we’ll have to ask the police to escort you out.”
As she spoke, many reporters exchanged glances and subconsciously made way. Finally, the hospital staff could move the patients. Even though everyone could manage without Julia’s help, she still wanted to pitch in.
Joseph’s gaze inadvertently caught the bloodstains on her hand and the front of her shirt. His eyes widened in shock. He immediately lifted Julia agam and headed into the hospital. Amelie, left behind, widened her eyes, stomped her foot under the curious gaze of the reporters, and then hurried to catch up.
