“I’m not a fan of wasting food,” Drake replied, his tone casual but pointed.
“Neither am I,” Debra quipped back, matching his indifference..
He leaned forward. “What do you feel like eating tonight? American? Italian? French?”
“I’m easy to please. Whatever works,” Debra replied.
Her sudden shift in attitude from earlier caught Peter off guard.
“Sir, she’s only behaving now because she’s in front of you. During lunch, she…”
Drake didn’t even let him finish. He asked Debra, “What’s the request now?”
Debra smiled, “You’re sharp, Mr. Lowe.”
Peter was confused. Drake was supposed to punish Debra, but there wasn’t even a hint of anger on his face.
“I’d like a phone,” Debra said.
Drake’s hand paused mid–cut as he sliced his steak. The request seemed to have hit a nerve.
Peter couldn’t believe his ears. “A hostage asking for a phone? Ms. Frazier, surely you’re joking.”
“I know you gave my ring to Juan. Whatever your motives are, one thing’s for sure. He doesn’t believe I’m dead,” Debra replied.
Drake’s expression told her the answer.
He thought that ring had been a gift from Juan, given their past marriage and the recent stint on that reality show together.
“Smart. Yes, I had the ring left behind. Anyone who dives to find you will come across it,” Drake replied coolly. “I’m curious to see how long Juan will scour the ocean before he realizes you’re still alive.”
Debra exhaled quietly, relieved. It seemed Drake had no clue about her connection to Marion.
She pressed on, “You enjoy these games, Mr. Lowe. Playing with us like we’re nothing more than mice. But even a mouse has its instincts. I bet Juan already knows I’m still out there, alive. I’m not asking for a phone to call him. There’s something else I need to take care of.”
Drake’s eyes narrowed. “Go on.”
The mercenaries you sent to hunt me and Juan on that island shot at the cameraman. Did you know about that?
Drake’s smile faded. Debra could tell from his reaction that those two mercenaries had already been dealt with. He had no idea what had gone down in that jungle.
She continued, “It was a live broadcast. Millions of people were watching. When the shot destroyed the camera, the feed cut off, leaving viewers to speculate. They’ll assume we were attacked by terrorists. I went missing, and Juan was injured. It won’t be long before the police start investigating, and then your will be in a world of trouble.”
