So what? My parents have been wanting me to help them with rent collection for ages,” I replied nonchalantly.
Andrew wanted to say more, but I feigned impatience. “Enough! I really don’t want to go back to work. I just want to stay with Lily. Don’t push it. Besides, Mum is getting older, and I really don’t trust her to take care of Lily. What if she takes her out and ‘accidentally‘ loses her?”
I could see a flicker of guilt flash across Andrew’s face.
“What do you mean? That’s impossible…”
“I was just saying it off the cuff! Let’s drop this topic.”
At that, Andrew didn’t dare to press the issue further.
That night, Andrew lay in bed, quickly falling asleep.
1, however, was restless, unable to find any peace.
This house felt increasingly unsafe.
I refused to hand Lily over to Margaret while I went back to work; they would surely become anxious and might do something reckless.
I decided I would take Lily back to my parents‘ house in the morning.
Just then, I heard soft footsteps at the door.
I have always had keen hearing, which allowed me to pick it up.
A chill ran down my spine, and I quickly closed my eyes, gripping my phone tightly in one hand while holding Lily securely in the other.
With a soft creak, the bedroom door slowly opened.

Then, I heard more soft footsteps.
Someone had approached the side of the bed.
Just as I sensed this person reaching out for my daughter, I suddenly opened my eyes and swung my phone hard at their head!
“Ouch!” a pained cry echoed.
I recognized that voice clearly; it was my mother–in–law, Margaret Johnson!
She had come to steal my daughter in the middle of the night!
Feigning panic, I exclaimed, “Who’s there? Who is it?”
Andrew, jolted awake, quickly switched on the light, seeing Margaret on the floor, holding her head. He rushed
“Mum! What happened?”
“You’ve hurt me!” Margaret moaned in pain.
That phone was hard, and I had swung with all my might–it would have been a miracle if it hadn’t hurt!
over to help her up.
After a moment, Margaret glared at me, anger radiating from her. “Emily, do you want to kill your own mother–in–law? You have a wicked
heart!”
Andrew shot me an unhappy look.
I feigned innocence. “I just woke up confused, thinking someone was trying to steal my baby! Mum, what were you doing sneaking into our room in the middle of the night?”
Margaret’s expression faltered for a moment.
But she quickly regained her bravado. “I couldn’t sleep, and I was just worried about my granddaughter!”
“Then you don’t need to sneak around!” I replied. “I’ll be up soon to feed the baby, so you can come by then!”
Margaret was at a loss for words. Andrew quickly stepped in to defuse the situation. “It was just a misunderstanding, Mum. I’ll take you back to your room to rest.”
With that, Andrew helped Margaret back to her room.
I tiptoed to Margaret’s door, straining to listen.
“Mum, why are you in such a hurry?”
“It’s because she won’t give me the baby! If that little brat is still here, how can we bring my beloved grandson home? The thought of my grandson out there makes my heart ache…”
“But you can’t just steal a child from home! If she loses the baby, even Emily would notice something was off!”
“I say we should just get rid of her and that little brat! End it once and for
“Mum! Are you crazy? If Emily dies without knowing why, her parents will never let it go! Didn’t we agree to just bring Charlie home and let him enjoy life? As for her parents, I’m still young–I can outlive them! After that, it wouldn’t be too late to deal with Emily!”
“Sigh…”
“You can’t act rashly, alright? From now on, discuss any plans
“Got it…”
As Andrew had yet to return, I hurried back to my room.
hurried cation. else!
After hearing that mother–son conversation, I no longer had any doubts about the voice I had heard.
Andrew and Margaret, you two are something else!
All these years, they had put on quite a façade!
I remembered when I was ill in university; Andrew had searched half the city at midnight to find a pharmacy and brought me medicine to my dorm.
After we got married, whenever I mentioned wanting something, that dish would be on the table the next day.
There were countless such instances.
That’s why I had never suspected either of them!
But when they casually talked about “getting rid of me,” they sounded so determined, even gritting their teeth, as if I were their enemy!
But to be fair, hadn’t I treated them well?
Initially, my parents didn’t approve of me being with Andrew, and I had pleaded with them until they finally relented.
the wedding, I didn’t ask for a penny in bride price; my family bought the house and car!
After we married, Andrew’s salary was just three thousand pounds a month, barely enough for his own spending! All household expenses were covered by me!
Yet I never thought myself superior; I respected and loved him and was dutiful to my mother–in–law.
But how had they treated me in return?
I gritted my teeth.
Did they want to see my parents suffer and then kill me too?
Let’s see who dies first!
