Chapter 6
Terence opened his eyes again. He had no idea how much time had passed. The first thing he saw was Hailey sitting by his bed and the elders surrounding them both. Their gazes were filled with concern and joy, yet they didn’t dare come closer.
Instead, they wished him a speedy recovery before leaving. Halley held his hand, her eyes filled with heartache for him for once. “I’m pregnant, Terence. Were finally having a child!”
Her words made his mind go blank. What did she just say? She was pregnant?
Terence slowly placed a hand on her belly as if wanting to feel the life that was growing within. He had mixed feelings about the situation–the child had come at the wrong time.
Hailey saw that he didn’t look too happy despite her pregnancy and thought he was upset about her not saving him from the water. “I know you’re upset about me not saving you from the pond, but I’m sure you can forgive me for our child’s sake.”
Terence couldn’t believe she thought he was angry at her for that. Even if he was, it wasn’t like she’d bothered to explain herself. She just assumed he would let her off the hook for it.
In the past, he probably would’ve listened to what she had to say. Now, however, he was no longer interested.
Terence calmly retracted his hand and said, “I’m tired. You should get some rest since you’re pregnant
now.”
Hailey didn’t seem fazed by his indifference. She got up and said, “I’m okay, but you should rest. I’ll go check on Matthew.”
Thanks to Terence falling into the water and Hailey’s pregnancy, everyone at Rainer Manor treated them like they were precious treasures. Various nutritious snacks were sent to their room.
Terence knew Hailey was only feeling sentimental because of her hormones. She didn’t leave his side for the next few days, which he wasn’t used to. They’d rarely spent time together since marrying, especially since she’d helped Matthew deal with his divorce.
They were nothing more than strangers living under the same roof. Now, however, she sat beside him while reading a document. She was so close that he could clearly hear her breathing.
This was a situation that he’d once looked forward to being in. Now, he wasn’t happy at all. In fact, he felt rather impatient.
Still, Hailey was pregnant. Terence’s morals made him hold back from lashing out at her. So, he pretended he was asleep most of the time.
Matthew couldn’t help gnashing his teeth angrily when he heard about Halley being pregnant. Flames of anger burned in his eyes.
Terence had promised him he would divorce Hailey and sever ties with her, yet now, she was Was Terence going to go back on his word and cling to Hailey? Would he refuse to make way Matthew?

However, Terence acted like he hadn’t heard Matthew’s question. He continued flipping through his book. His calmness and composure pissed Matthew off more. “I’m talking to you, Terence!”
Only then did Terence shut his book and look at Matthew. He asked calmly, “Did I say anything about not making way for you?”
This surprised Matthew. He’d always thought Terence was lying about getting the divorce–he would only have more clout in the Rainer family now that Hailey was pregnant.
And so, Matthew thought it was perfectly normal for Terence to go back on his word and refuse to go through with the divorce. He didn’t expect Terence to be so resolute,

Terence remained calm. “Hailey has people watching me; I can’t get the chance to leave the house. Think of a way to distract her.”
Matthew agreed. Before leaving, he asked Terence one last question. “Haven’t you already endured this for years? Why are you so intent on leaving now?”
Terence didn’t say anything for the longest time. Matthew was almost out the door when he heard the former say softly, “Because I’m not happy.”
He’d known from the beginning that Hailey liked Matthew, and he’d endured the fact that she kept flying abroad to be with Matthew. He’d endured the fact that she wanted to spend all her time with Matthew and that her mind was filled with thoughts of him.
It made no difference to him whether he endured this for a year, five years, or even a lifetime. He’d once thou :wouldn’t be too bad for him to continue enduring like this. Things would get better once he got
used it
However, he couldn’t sleep at night due to the emotional torment. One thought kept bubbling to the surface; he couldn’t push it away no matter what–he was unhappy.
Terence was genuinely unhappy in his marriage to Hailey. Life had a limited number of days, and he only wanted to spend the rest of his time on Earth on himself. He didn’t want to waste it trying to win the heart of a woman who didn’t love him–not anymore.
One night, Hailey returned home, tired from work. She was about to enter Terence’s room when her phone
rang.
She answered it to hear Matthew say tearfully, “Hailey, my ex–wife is bothering me again-”
The line cut off before he could get any further. Hailey forgot all about Terence and hurried to Matthew’s place with her bodyguards.
Once she was gone, Terence came out of his room in a coat. Nobody noticed him.
