The surgical lights came on, and though I was supposed to drift off under the anesthesia, I kept hearing snippets of conversation:

“Such a shame. The child is already fully formed.”
“Luna and Alpha Joseph were a perfect match, but I heard they’re not fated mates. That made their pregnancy even more difficult. It’s a tragic irony that such a rare child ended up being lost this way.”

Alpha Joseph and I were true childhood
sweethearts.

I watched from the sidelines, silently envious.
But ten years ago, the Wilderness Pack was attacked by rogue wolves. Alpha Joseph’s father was killed by the rogues while defending the pack. Alpha Joseph’s mother was also slain by the rogues while searching for Alpha Joseph, who had gone out to meet Hallie.

He trained Alpha Joseph to become stronger, lent him money to raise an army, and assisted him in rebuilding the Wilderness Pack.
